Scripture is full of passages about engaging with the Word of God. The expectation is that individual believers will enter into relationship with God through His word. Some highlights:

  • Deuteronomy 6:6-9
6 “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.
7 “You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
8 “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.
9 “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

This passage encapsulates the notion that men will be actively pursuing teaching their sons the Word of God.
  • Exodus 13:14
14 “And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ then you shall say to him, ‘With a powerful hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery.
    Deuteronomy 6:20
20 “When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What do the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments mean which the Lord our God commanded you?’
Note these two passages have in them the expectation that men will be conversing with their sons about the purposes of God in both the larger story of God’s redemptive purpose and God’s involvement in the particular life of the individual.
  • Malachi 4:6
6 “He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.”
