Ephesians 6:17 "And take... the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
2 Timothy 2:2 "The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also."
In the past several years there has been an increasing interest in the Christian community in the development of men’s ministries. In particular with Men’s Fraternity, Ransomed Heart, Raising a Modern Day Knight, there has been emphasis on raising boys to be men. There has been emphasis placed on the need to invite and transition boys into manhood through intentional ceremonies with other men as witnesses. While affirming the value of these practices, Entrusting Truth aims to take this practice to a different level.
In many of these ceremonies a replica of a sword is presented to the young man who is being invited and initiated into manhood. This is symbolic of being a warrior in the kingdom of God and is representative of the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.
For the past two years I have been meeting with my son on a regular basis helping him with an overview of the Bible. The initial purpose of this time was to prepare him, at his request, to teach Sunday school at his church. We have worked through all of the New Testament together and are about halfway through the Old Testament. During this study my middle son has joined us when he was in town. My youngest son joined us this fall when he started college. Men have noticed the time we are investing together in the Word. Several have indicated interest in doing a similar thing with their sons.
Why not, during a manhood service present young men with the sword of the Spirit?
It is my belief that fathers want to meet with their sons in this type of study. They do not know how. One of the first aims of Entrusting Truth is to equip men with a simple structure through which they will be able to meet with their sons in an overview of the Word of God. Thus giving them a handle on the sword of the Spirit.
