In the Grass
Posted on August 03, 2010

For the past few months I have been meeting a guy for breakfast. He had missed one of the workshops and wanted to get some help in leading his family in the Word. We have been doing several verse analysis studies and slowly building up his confidence in the Word.

He shared a prayer request for some men who lived in a retirement home near him. He expressed an interest in getting them into a Bible study. Since he was not sure if they were all believers I suggested that he do an evangelistic study in the book of John and offered to help him. We started the study about four weeks ago. It is really different. Essentially it is my friend, and 80 year old man, and me. I have learned a lot.

First I learned that I tend to evaluate ministry incorrectly. I tend to view effectiveness by the “quality” of the target. When I told my Jenny the age of the man we were meeting with, she remarked, “If he is going to make disciples he better hurry up.” We laughed; but he needs to be into the Word. One thing I have noticed about him is that he is reluctant to share what he sees in the Text. When there is a “teacher” around he is quick to defer to them. Secondly, it is hard for him to get beyond what he thinks he knows to what the text is saying. Several times we will ask an observation question and he will respond with what he thinks without really interacting with the text. There have been a couple of times when the text contradicted his thoughts, when directed to the text it is very difficult for him to process that it does not say what he wants it to say.

Two things emerged from this for me. First, I have to continually fight through what I bring to the Bible to make sure I am actually reading what it says. Like my 80 year old friend, I have a few opinions. It is easy to try to bend the scripture to fit them. But it requires me to ignore or discount what the inspired Word of God is saying.

Second, exposing this gentleman to the Word in this way is quality. My responsibility before God is to invest in whomever the Lord brings. His age does not diminish his worth. I have seen in the past years young men and women removed. People whom the search for effectiveness would suggest are a “better” investment than this man. Reality is that we have no promise for tomorrow. We cannot wait to choose a “better quality” ministry. I am asked to invest in the people God brings across my path. It is for that I will be held accountable.
